The recently published work of Arcangela Tarabotti, Convent Paradise, edited and translated by Meredith K. Ray and Lynn Lara Westwater, fits well with the growing body of scholarship on women's literary practices and their roles in the cultural and religious life of the early modern period.Ray and Westwater's insightful introduction to the text, which goes above and beyond a mere introduction, successfully places Tarabotti in historical and historiographical context.This translation is a great addition to the Other Voice in Early Modern Europe series.Ray and Westwater have skillfully reworked Tarabotti's complicated text into a readable English translation.The introduction, which is supported by insightful and well-researched footnotes, is an indispensable guide to Tarabotti's account of convent life.Ray and Westwater give a brief introduction of Tarabotti's works, which consisted of seven widely circulated manuscripts and several others that have been lost.Tarabotti was radical in most of her texts, which largely criticized the forced monachization of girls.Ray and Westwater claim that while Tarabotti's feminist thought has generated wide interest, her devotional work such as the Convent Paradise has had no modern edition or translation until now, even though this particular text was the reason for her literary success.Convent Paradise gives the reader important details of the cultural and religious environment that shaped Tarabotti's life and literary voice.While Convent Hell and many of her other works, which were banned by the church, are filled with criticism of patriarchy, forced monachization, and the miseries of living in a convent for unwilling nuns, in Convent Paradise, she celebrates the spiritual life of nuns and the trials of enclosures.She confesses that she has finally accepted her faith and vocation.Convent Hell and Convent Paradise can be understood as two radical perspectives of the same person on the experiences of the same convent, where one belongs to "a nun by vocation, and the other to a nun by coercion."
