Résumé
This study is addressed to the era immediately following the Second World War.At the time, few people in Saskatchewan, or anywhere else for that matter, knew much about the Aboriginal community.For most, the Native was a somewhat faceless and enigmatic character described largely in negative and stereotypical terms.Only seldom did anyone fully appreciate the distinctions that defined groupings within Native society, and, initially at least, this ignorance was as true of the CCF government of Tommy Douglas as it had been of previous provincial administrations.Part of the problem concerning Aboriginal terminology -then and now -is that superimposed on both the shared and distinctive features of the various components of the Native community were artificial and legalistic definitions, ascribed by distant federal officials more interested in administering Indian Affairs programs than in recognizing the cultural realities of Native life.As a result, local politicians, bureaucrats, and the general public rarely understood the legal and social niceties associated with the terms 'Indian' or 'Metis' and often confused them.Hence, in the interest of clarifying terminology found in this book, it is necessary to provide some definitions.The term 'white' has been adopted in reference to everyone other than Native people.In itself, it is not a precise word in that it fails to acknowledge peoples of various ethnic backgrounds and skin colours; nevertheless, it has been employed here out of deference to the currency the term has achieved in popular usage and as a matter of convenience.It can be equated with the expression 'non-Native' and is used interchangeably with the phrase 'Euro-Canadian/ which is equally imprecise.As unsatisfactory as the term 'white' may be, it should be recognized that virtually all existing terminology attempting to portray the wider society accurately is problematic.As the title of this book implies, 'Native' is the term generally used to describe the subject of the study.It is true that some Native people today
