Becoming a Human Rights City which led to the establishment of the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights.Since 2005 the core work of the John Humphrey Centre has focused on building from the centre out-that is, building a human rights community.Since its inception the centre's work has grown to cover the province of Alberta, to stretch throughout the prairies, and now to reach across Canada.It made a commitment to build Edmonton as a true "human rights city," a place where everyone participates, belongs, and is included.In doing so, the centre joined an emerging movement of other cities across the world that included Rosario in Argentina and Graz in Austria, and has been inspired by Shulamith Koenig and the People's Movement for Human Rights Education. 1 At the John Humphrey Centre we made a commitment to inspire learning on human rights, for human rights are the most real in those spaces closest to home.In Eleanor Roosevelt's words:Where, after all, do universal human rights begin?In small places, close to home-so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any map of the world.Yet they are the world of the individual person: The neighborhood he [sic] lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm or office where he works.Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination.Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere.Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world. 2 The following is a reflection on the work of the John Humphrey Centre over the past 15 years to build human rights "spaces" at home in Edmonton, Alberta.In this time the centre has worked across many communities and sectors, which has resulted in the growth of a framework of theory and practice that informs its work.What has become clear in this journey is that human rights are the one thing that binds us and gives us a collective framework for demanding accountability and renée vaugeOiS
