documentation of the participation and contributions of the founding peoples of Canada during the First World War is, surprisingly, scant.Most of the literature dedicated to the wartime experiences of indians exists within a national perspective permeated by a dominant thematic tradition that P. Whitney Lackenbauer and r.Scott Sheffield label the "Forgotten Warrior" genre. 1 Within this construct, historians and commentators have recently resurrected the exploits of indian servicemen and -women in order to promote an agenda of recognition and commemoration akin to that bestowed upon their white comrades.the goal of these studies, which succumb to an interpretive orthodoxy based on recycled generalizations and anecdotal corroboration, is to ensure that indian veterans receive acknowledgement for their forgotten sacrifice in increasingly reconciliatory and apologetic Canadian political and social environments.Fred gaffen's Forgotten Soldiers (1985), Pegahmagabow: Legendary Warrior, Forgotten Hero (2003) by adrian Hayes, and Janice Summerby's Native Soldiers, Foreign Battlefields (2005) adhere to this paradigm.2 While this remembrance is certainly worthy, and extremely important, it is not representative of the broader transnational issues and Canadian-specific realities and policies surrounding indian participation in the First World War.in the last decade, however, academics have begun to deviate from this motif by engaging in more scholarly appraisals, represented by L. James dempsey's Warriors of the King: Prairie Indians in World War I (1999).3 Similarly, other detailed explorations of regional contributions and community-specific experiences have recently appeared.4 nevertheless, all accounts remain lodged in a national framework permeated by the "Forgotten Warrior" approach.Historians have not moved beyond blinding national affiliations and have completely disregarded the position of the British Colonial and War offices in requesting, and promoting, indian service.this investigation addresses this national component, along with the dominant international themes that directly influenced indian participation, and the policies and administration surrounding their multi-faceted involvement in the great War.
