A Magnetopause Model for Sizing Artificial Magnetospheres at Mars and Lagrange-1 Orbits
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Our prior work showed that a Martian equatorial surface or near subsurface high-temperature superconducting ring (HTS ring) could generate a global magnetic field that provides two main atmosphere-protecting phenomena: (1) to form a paraboloidal artificial magnetopause (MP) to act as a shield against solar wind particles, and (2) to act as a cage to sputtered and photoionized upper-atmospheric particles. Such HTS rings to hard-surface solar bodies, but not to free-floating HTS rings at Lagrange orbits and elsewhere. Lagrange 1 (L1) semi-stable orbits are distant from their co orbiting parent planets. For example, the Sol-Mars L1 co-orbit is ~318.74 marsRii (1,082,484 km) distant to Mars. Consequently, a HTS ring at the Sol-Mars L1 orbit might not keep Mars within its long magnetospheric tail for three main reasons: (1) Sol’s own heliospheric magnetic field would treat the L1 HTS ring as a compass needle under magnetic torque; (2) turbulent solar-wind buffeting of the magnetotail; and (3) the lack of a local Martian magnetic ‘cage’ field to retain sputtered and photoionized upper atmospheric ions. This new work describes the rationale and development of the Portable MP Model that is simple, intuitive, analytical, and portable to five classes of planetary-scale magnetic dipole moments: (1) natural dynamo solar bodies (Mercury, Earth, Jupiter, Ganymede, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), (2) solar bodies that are given surface or near-subsurface HTS rings (such as proposed for Mars), (3) L1-orbit HTS rings (such as proposed for the Sol-Mars L1 co orbit), (4) HTS-ringed space stations and space ships, and (5) HTS-ringed free floating astronauts. The Portable MP Model also accurately computes the MP-standoff distance (\mathbit{r}_{\mathbit{mp}}) in the nearfield of human-engineered rings (as proposed for Mars). Additionally, being primarily a magnetic model, the Portable MP Model can look into dipole-dominant planetary interiors to compute ‘best-fit’ dynamo-layer ring size and amperage magnitude—we report on the ‘best-fit’ dynamo-layer rings for Mercury and Earth. The simplicity of the new Portable MP Model makes it intuitive and educational, opening research into the engineering and application of magnetopauses to a wide audience: space-science and engineering professionals, math and science students from sixth grade to university graduate level, and the industrious public.
