Résumé
Abstract Hans Jonas (1903-1993) was born in a small town in Germany. In the 1920s, he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Freiburg under the world famous philosopher Martin Heidegger and the well-known theologian Rudolf Bultmann. In 1928, he received his doctorate summa cum laude from the University of Marburg. In 1933, with the accession of Hitler to power, he left Germany and found his way to mandate Palestine, where he began to lecture on philosophy and the history of religions. With the beginning of World War II, he joined the British army and fought in the North African campaign. After the end of the war, he returned to his academic studies while also serving in Israel’s army, with the rank of lieutenant, during Israel’s War of Independence in 1948-1949. In 1949, he left Israel for a teaching position at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. This was followed by a one year appointment at Carleton College in Ottawa, and a more permanent position at the New School for Social Research in New York City. He chaired the Department of Philosophy at the New School from 1957 to 1963 and served as Alvin Johnson Professor of Philosophy at the New School between 1966 and his retirement in 1976. His first important scholarly monograph, dealing with early Christian doctrine, was published in German in 1930 under the title Augustin und das paulinische Freiheitsproblem. It clearly shows the influence of Heidegger’s existentialism and Bultmann’s “demythologizing” hermeneutic. This was followed by his most well known work, Gnosis und spaetaniker Geist (1934-1935), which originally appeared in two volumes in German. Again, Jonas worked to demythologize early gnosticism and give it a this-worldly interpretation. The study was translated into English in 1958 and has remained influential ever since.
