Abernethy, "Canonical Imagination, COVID-19, and Communion: Illumination from Isaiah's Banquet and Purim in Esther," JTI 16 (2, 2022) 149-67. Theological interpretation offers a matrix within which theology, ecclesial realities, Scripture, and contemporary life can intersect. My article foregrounds how the era of COVID-19 is an occasion when the church should accentuate a tenet central to Communion, i.e. victory over death. In this exercise in canonical imagination, I draw upon two OT feasts that celebrate victory over death—Isaiah's eschatological banquet (Isa 25:6-8) and Purim in Esther 9–10 in an attempt to further infuse our theological reflection on the Eucharist with the theme of victory over death during times of COVID-19. Isaiah 25 underscores how the eschatological feast to which the Eucharist points will be an occasion on which death is annihilated. Purim, for its part, illuminates how the Eucharist is an occasion for celebrating the passing of a death sentence and for forging bonds among the displaced. Honoring the Wise: Wisdom in Scripture, Ministry, and Life, 219-32 [see #2538]. The world is awash with data, information, and even knowledge. We receive plenty of news, too, but it isn't always reliable, is it? Nevertheless, the mind is made for truth, and we long to find wisdom. Psalm 111 points us in the right direction. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding." Joseph was a wise counselor, which is why Pharaoh put him in charge of storing Egypt's grain in the years before the famine (Genesis 41). Joshua humbled himself and learned the skills of leadership from Moses. That is why Deut 34:9 says, "Joshua was filled with the spirit of wisdom." When Solomon became king, he asked God for wisdom (1 Kgs 3:5-11). He collected proverbs from the world's sages. He eagerly studied plant life and the ways of animals. Later in life, however, Solomon's heart turned away from the true worship of God [End Page 882] to the folly of idols (1 Kgs 11:1-9). The prophet Jeremiah had a healthy suspicion concerning leaders who claimed to be wise. According to Jeremiah, the stork, the dove, the swift, the thrush, all these birds recognize the times and the seasons, but the scribes in Jerusalem know nothing because they have rejected the word of the Lord (Jer 8:7-9). What does Isaiah contribute to the discussion about wisdom? Isa 11:9 anticipates a coming Messiah. "The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him, the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord."—F.W.G. [Healing in the OT and the African (Yoruba) Context] David Adamo, "'I Am the Lord your Healer' Exodus 15:26: Healing in the Old Testament and the African (Yoruba) Context," IDSk 55 (1, 2021) 1-8 [see Editor's Notes, p. 963]. The concept of healing is important, both in the OT and in Nigerian/Yoruba traditions. But there has been very little discussion of "Yhwh as Healer" in OT theology. While the OT does not give us a systematic definition of health or medicine, it does offer a picture of healthy people as seen in their actions and in the way they live. Their lives are marked by šālôm ("peace"), ṣedeq ("righteousness"), šĕmaʿ ("obedience"), kōaḥ ("strength") poriyut ("fertility"), and ʾōrek yāmîm ("longevity"). Prophets...
