I hear Sean coughing before I see his dirty knees at eye-level. The boat was a gift from Chris Kisbey when they left for a place called Sarnia in the middle of a jungle called Canada. Chris's Da said it's all petrol business there and an honest Irishman can get work. The boat's too clunky to float. Ignoring Sean I pick it up and a tiny bronze starfish falls off and a string of green slime clings. I want to lick the boat, I can taste the salty wood, but don't, I'm not a born eejit. Sean's knees are scabby black because Da's been making us all kneel on the floor twice a day and say the rosary for work. Our floor's all cementy not like the lovely padded kneelers in church (when we get to sit in a pew), it's full of pebbly holes, and Sean's not fit for it anymore. Da makes Mammy kneel too, her knees are always covered in sores anyway, really scabby, I think it's called sore … isis. I wanted to punch Chris Kisbey the one time he said something . Da never joins our praying. He walks behind us and hocks louies and drips them on our heads, only the boys, if you look back it's a cuff that'll put a different face on you. In really mad times he puts his knuckle in the groove at the bottom of your head and rubs it up hard and tips you over and it hurts for a long time. He always says, "Do youse think Jesus wants to be hearin' the rosary like it's a pig auction?" I don't think Jesus ever went to a pig auction. When Da's drunk with his friends he shouts about the church being all a cod. Sean makes a splash kicking my shin and I taste salt. "Gimme that," and coughs right on my head speckling the lovely pale wood of the boat with red. I squeeze it between both hands. "No it's mine, look what you done what's my head look! He's my only friend now that Chris Kisbey's gone, the nicest man at the docks ever. He puts his big gnarly hand like a king crab on my shoulder and always bends down, he has no teeth and his breath smells worse than the back-lane dungill.
