Résumé

The paper addresses the issue of renaming city toponyms, the phenomena of historical memory, and, more broadly, national identity. Based on the historical material of the two largest cities in Canada, each of which was renamed at a certain moment, I try to prove that the search and development of symbols is the matter of foremost importance in the process of forming a national identity. It allows, on the one hand, to separate the nation from other national communities, and, on the other hand, to emphasize the special preferences of the nation, making it an important part of the identity of each individual. Such symbols may include new toponyms, but the need for them arises under the influence of the internal logic of the national ideology development. To paraphrase the classic phrase of E. Gellner, it is not new toponyms that create nationalism, but nationalism that creates new toponyms. The proposed work aims to analyze two historical examples of the renaming of cities - York to Toronto in 1834 and Bytown to Ottawa in 1855 - to highlight that the change in toponyms was influenced by the development of Canadian national identity that took place in that era, was the direct result of this process and was not the product of opportunistic manipulation by the political elites. On the contrary, it reflected the then popular mindset.
