Neuroprotection as a way to rehabilitate patients after haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome

The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of Citoflavin in the correction of mild cognitive disorders detected in the process of dispensary observation in patients who had undergone a moderate form of HFRS. Patients and methods. We conducted a comprehensive examination of 50 patients who had undergone a moderately severe form of HFRS with laboratory confirmation and were discharged from the infectious hospital, in whom mild cognitive disorders were detected as part of the postinfection syndrome in the course of medical examination. The patients were randomised into 2 groups of 25 patients each. The patients of the main group received intravenous infusions of Cytoflavin (CF) for 10 days at a dose of 10 ml per 100 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride solution, the comparison group – ‘active placebo’ (100.0 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride solution). During the examination, the patients were questioned using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA test) and SF-36 questionnaire before and after 10 days of neuroprotective therapy. Results. In the dynamics of observation, patients in the main group in comparison with the placebo group showed significant differences in the number of complaints about dizziness, headache, decreased mental performance, sleep disorders; in the MoCA-test a higher total score was recorded against the background of increased level of cognitive functions; according to the results of the SF-36 questionnaire a significant improvement in the quality of life was registered due to physical functioning and condition, pain intensity, general condition, vital activity and mental indices. The tolerability of Cytoflavin in all patients was good, no side effects were observed. Conclusion. Cytoflavin in the complex treatment of patients with mild cognitive impairment as part of the postinfection syndrome who have suffered from moderately severe forms of HFRS allows to reduce neurological deficit and contributes to the restoration of neurocognitive functions.
