working on a doctoral dissertation, supervised by Professor Vincent Gillespie, on metaphors of love in the writings of Richard Rolle, with particular attention to the Cistercian commentary tradition on the Song of Songs.This topic informed several of the articles that he wrote in the years immediately following, published in 'The Medi eval Translator' and 'The Medi eval Mystical Tradition in England' series, and eventually culminated in his well-respected first mono graph, Language, Self and Love: Hermeneutics in the Writings of Richard Rolle and the Commentaries on the Song of Songs, published by the University of Wales Press in 2001.During this early period, Denis also published important articles on the thirteenth-century Wooing Group and the related treatise A Talkyng of the Loue of God, and essays on the Cloud-author, Margery Kempe, and Marguerite Porete -early fruits of the fascination with the Middle English mystics and with female religiosity that were to colour his entire scholarly career.A combination of these two interests led to the first of his many co-edited collections: Writing Religious Women: Female Spiritual and Textual Practices in Late Medi eval England (with Christiania Whitehead, 2000), particularly focused on anchoritic and Carthusian spirituality, and on The Book of Margery Kempe.Hidden amidst this varied output are two oft-cited articles on the devotion to the Name of Jesus ('Anglo-Norman and Middle-English Translations' 1996; 'The Name Poured Out' 1996).These were the early stirrings of an interest that was to come to full fruition many years later. 2002-2015From 2002, just three years before Denis's appointment as professeur ordinaire at the University of Lausanne, a new medi eval text comes into focus in his research: the little-known Doctrine of the Hert, a fifteenth-century Middle English translation of a thirteenth-century Latin treatise for religious from the Low Countries that became a devotional bestseller all over Europe.Denis focused initially on the Doctrine's astonishing use of household imagery and the strategies of its Middle English translator in a series of articles in the early 2000s.These investigations culminated in a critical edition of the Doctrine in 2009, co-edited with Christiania Christiania Whitehead (christiania.whitehead
