Missionary work has always been one of the main directions in the policy of the Russian Orthodox Church. The main goal of missionary activity was the baptism of people of other faiths, which was realized through preaching, worship services, conversations, building churches, opening schools in parish churches, providing medical care, charitable acts, etc. In the Yenisei province, especially in the Turukhansk region, the religious and moral education level of local population in the last quarter of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries still remained low. Therefore, the task of the missionary priests continued to be the establishment of the indigenous peoples in the Orthodox faith, instilling in them Christian customs, freeing them from the influence of shamans and pagan superstitions. The article reveals the role of missionary priests in studying the history and culture of the local population of the southern and northern outskirts of Siberia as part of missionary activities. Particular attention is paid to the most prominent representatives of the clergy who carried out educational and scientific activities in the Minusinsk and Achinsk districts and the Turukhansk region in the last quarter of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The author draws attention to scientific publications devoted to this topic and notes the research of V.N. Asochakova, D.V. Averyanova, V.V. Khorina, L.N. Kharchenko, A.A. Terskova and others. The purpose of this article is to study the educational and research activities of Nikolai Orfeev, Mikhail Suslov, Simeon Chismochakov. The article provides brief biographical information about each of the above-mentioned missionary priests. The study was prepared on the basis of such sources as the magazine “Yenisei Diocesan Gazette” and archival documents of the State Archive of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The richest historical and ethnographic sources are travel notes, articles, and reports of missionary priests. In conclusion, the significant contribution of the scientific research of N. Orfeev, M. Suslov and S. Chismochakov to the development of the history and ethnography of the indigenous peoples of the Yenisei province is noted.
