The INAF/OPSys facility: a unique laboratory for integration and testing of space instrumentation and small-payload systems
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The Optical Payload Systems (OPSys) facility is a controlled environment laboratory of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), sited at ALTEC S.p.A in Turin, Italy, designed and engineered for the integration and testing of contamination sensitive optical space flight instrumentation. It consists of a 100m2 area divided in 3 zones with different cleanliness level: a control room at ISO8 level, an operation room at ISO7 level and the integration and testing room at ISO5 level. This latter area houses an optical bench where operating the core activity. The bench can be closed with a dedicated tank and put under vacuum conditions, down to 10-6 bar, with environmental and instrumental thermal control. The facility was realized especially for testing solar instruments like coronagraphs with a solar source in combination with an off-axis parabolic mirror collimating the light to have the same solar angular divergence. This makes the OPSys unique in Europe with only another equivalent in the world at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC. In recent years, the facility was the stage for the integration and the calibration of instrument on board of important mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) and of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) such as METIS/Solar Orbiter, ASPIICS/PROBA-3, and CODEX. Besides, the coronagraphs AntarctiCor and CorMag of the INAF have been qualified and tested for operating in Antarctica and on a stratospheric balloon, respectively. The OPSys also hosted the test for the study and the characterization of the SailCor prototype (Phase A study), a compact coronagraph for a CubeSat mission flying on a solar sail platform. Moreover, the facility activity is part of the program for the proposed study and development of the prototype for the SELENE mission, a CubeSat platform proposed for boarding an imager that will observe the solar corona orbiting the Moon and using the Moon limb as solar occulter. Besides the use for testing coronagraph, the OPSys facility is equipped with several GSE that make it versatile for supporting integration and test on different type of space instrumentation and payloads. In this paper, we present the facility, its involvement in the scientific programme of the INAF, and its potential for supporting several testing opportunities within national and international collaborations.
