The second half of the twentieth century witnessed dramatic changes that re-shaped Asian America.The formal dismantling of exclusion laws starting in 1943, combined with immigration reforms and refugee migrations opened new avenues of entry and brought new groups to the United States for the first time.The Asian American population increased rapidly in these years, growing ever-more diverse along class and ethnic lines.Geographic mobility also expanded.No longer concentrated in West Coast urban centers, Asian Americans began to spread out, settling in areas across the United States, in cities and suburbs alike.The field of urban history is only starting to examine these more recent demographic transformations.Much of the earlier scholarship focused on the late nineteenth and early twentieth century period, when Asians first began arriving in large numbers and establishing Chinatowns, Japantowns, and Little Manilas in West Coast cities, with an emphasis on California.Anti-Asian exclusion remained a constant theme in these works, which in the urban context meant segregation, containment, and the creation of borders (both symbolic and material). 1It's not that early Asia America lacked diversity or that scholars approached this history in the same way.Rather, the exclusion regime targeted all Asians regardless of background, which served as a unifying force in the scholarly literature.
