The scenario of the contemporary world of work has been undergoing significant transformations, not only with the Covid-19 pandemic, but certainly enhanced by it. In Rio Grande do Sul this number reached 41.1%. According to the Brazilian Institute of Economics and Statistics (IBGE), in the first quarter of 2022, the rate of informality in the labor market reached 40.4% of the employed population in Brazil. In Rio Grande do Sul this number reached 41.1%. In this way, it reached more than 38 million people. In comparison with the same quarter of 2021, almost 3 million formal jobs were created in the private sector; almost 3 million formal jobs were created in the private sector. This study is structured from the theoretical assumptions of the categories of work and precarious work, work and the theory of social representations. The objective of this text is to understand the social representations about work created and experienced by freelance journalists who work in informal and precarious situations in Vale do Rio dos Sinos - RS. The methodological procedures adopted to carry out the research were: from the point of view of the approach to the problem, the qualitative paradigm was chosen; as for its objectives, the research has a descriptive and exploratory proposal; as a technical procedure, a field research was carried out, to analyze the testimonies collected from the foundations of the Theory of Social Representations, the main assumptions of content analysis were used. The analysis of the work was based on three categories, which are: a) The first impact: my work without guarantees; b) Am I a journalist? The unearned identity; and c) Future prospects. From the division of categories, it is possible to understand the impacts of precarious work on the lives of individuals.
