To investigate the tradition of carnival in the West Indies and its establishment in London as the Notting Hill Carnival. Tracing through the development of the spectacle and how the traditions and styles have adapted the Carnival of today, 2011

Résumé
The Notting Hill Carnival has been in existence for 53 years. It was started up by Claudia Jones following the racial attacks from groups of youngsters known as Teddy Boys upon the West Indian community. The first shipload of West Indians initially moved to the United Kingdom in 1948, after being misleadingly advertised they would be greatly welcomed and would be able to start and create a new life after World War II. If Claudia Jones and the West Indian community had not stood up and fought for their heritage and culture, Notting Hill Carnival possibly would not have come to exist, or indeed, be as big as it is today.\nNotting Hill Carnival is, therefore, a celebration of West Indian culture and traditions. It is furthermore, an event that evokes a carnival held yearly in Trinidad and Tobago, in the streets of the capital Port-Of-Spain, to celebrate the emancipation of slaves in 1838. Although Carnival plays a big part of Trinidad popular history, it was originally only for the upper classes and the authorities of the country to mark the beginning of Lent.\nThe art of carnival was first taken to the Caribbean back in the 15th century when the first islands were invaded by various European countries. Celebrations were common amongst the indigenous inhabitants of Trinidad to commemorate deaths of loved family and friends. They were, however, on opposite ends of the scale -in flamboyance and magnitude- to what the Carnival would later become.\nThere are five essential components in Notting Hill Carnival each of which makes the day appealing and enjoyable for the spectators. They are: Calypso Singing; Masquerade; Steel Pan Drums; and Static and Mobile Sound Systems. The music from the Sound Systems and the Calypso, all set the level for the high energy filled day of Carnival. The music and singing making up an exotic atmosphere and giving the performers a rhythm to dance and move to. Calypso singing dates back to when slaves -while working in the sugar plantations- were forbidden to speak among themselves thus using this form of singing as a means of communication.\nEven if music plays such a big part in the Carnival, when spectators line the streets they are not less amazed by the size and themes of the showy costumes. In order to engage in the creation of a potential Carnival costume, I have researched the history of both, the West Indian carnival of Trinidad, and its British version Notting Hill Carnival. I have used the information and gathered inspiration from both, to create my own extravagant carnival costume on the theme of Unity.
