Bible Through the Ages \nLibrary Exhibit, 6 December 2002 - 26 January 2003 \nOn display are selected items from the Jordan Library's collection \nof about 1200 Bibles, representing many historically significant \nversions. Included are facsimiles of early illuminated manuscripts \nand printed editions from 1491 to 2001 in various translations and \nversions in some sixty languages, with and without illustration, in \nformats large and small. \nAbout sixty Bibles (or parts of Bibles) were exhibited in seven \ncases arranged in the following categories by chronology, \nlanguage, version or other feature: \nEarly manuscript reproductions \nManuscripts in Hebrew and Latin, including the Book of Kells \n(Trinity College Dublin) and the Biblia Pauperum. \nEarly printed editions \nEditions in Hebrew, Latin and Greek, including a reproduction \nof the Gutenberg Bible. 17th and 18th century editions with \nengraved title-pages also are featured, as shown in the following illustrations. \nNotable English translations \nIncluded: Tyndale, Coverdale, Bishops', Geneva, Douai, and the role of King James whose \nauthorized version of 1611 continues to be used today. Various anomalies of translation also \nare represented -- the so-called "She", "He", and "Breeches" Bibles. \nAround the world in many languages \nIncluded: Luther's German text and the French Louis Segond \nversion. The role of the British and Foreign Bible Society in \ndisseminating the Bible is described. \nCanadian Bibles - early imprints \nThe role of the Canadian Bible Society and others in fostering the \ntranslation of the Bible into many native North American \nlanguages are acknowledged. \nMiniatures and interesting bindings and illustrations \nIncluded: a "finger" Bible and the beautifully illustrated editions by \nSalvador Dali and Gustave Doré. Also featured is a rare 1635 \nmetrical psalm book, where some tunes are printed upside down on facing pages, so that \none book could be used by singers on either side of the choir.
