Résumé
In January 2011, internationally renowned artist and director Wajdi Mouawad, who was involved in Mons 2015 and its year as European Capital of Culture, came up with an unprecedented project aimed at fifty teenagers from Belgium, France and Canada: between the ages of fifteen and twenty, they were given the chance to spend one week a year travelling around the world, visiting theatres in their home towns, and asking themselves some “burning questions” about adolescence, with a view to “learning to think for themselves”. The researcher has spent five years with them, observing the experience in order to take a close-up, in-depth look at the process organised by the artist, finding out how the twenty Belgian teenagers involved in the project got on and what they talked about. The comprehensive analysis of this “adventure” produced by the researcher is based on the notion of challenge (challenging yourself, others, school your family and society). Among other things, the researcher carried out an ethnographic observation of five trips (2011-2015) and developed a comprehensive, inductive and original approach, filming one-to-one interviews each year (2011-2017), which form the substance of 20 documentary portraits and a film that brings this odyssey to an end. Using a range of different approaches and disciplines, the researcher has adopted a method based on listening and talking to produce a reflective, collaborative end product with the 20 subjects. The project fits in perfectly with information and communication sciences, contributing to the body of theory for these fields.
