The cost of living for a professional household in Morgantown is on par with a selection of the nation's urban areas, according to the ACCRA Cost of Living Index.Morgantown was the 76th most expensive place to live among the 298 urban areas that participated in the survey during the forth quarter of 2005.The ACCRA Cost of Living Index reflects the cost differentials for the standard of living present in a professional or managerial household in the top income quintile found in urban areas throughout the U.S. and Canada.These differentials are estimated through more than 50,000 prices covering almost 60 different goods and services for which prices are collected.ACCRA, a professional association of community and economic development researchers, compiles these prices and publishes the Cost of Living Index on a quarterly basis.The Bureau of Business and Economic Research conducted the price survey in conjunction with ACCRA by canvassing Morgantown area businesses.ACCRA calculates the index through a weighting structure.For instance, grocery items carry a weight of 13 percent of the total while housing and health care items carry a weight of 29 and 4 percent respectively.The average for all areas participating in the cost of living survey is 100 and each city's index is interpreted compared to the average for all places.An index below 100 means that an area's cost of living is less than average and an index number above 100 means that it is above average.Morgantown's cost for a professional/managerial household's standard of living was 1.1 percent above the average in the fourth quarter of 2005.In comparison to other participating local urban areas (Charleston, Martinsburg, and Pittsburgh), Morgantown was the highest priced due to housing, utilities, and health care costs, as demonstrated in Figure 1 below.When comparing Morgantown, which is home to West Virginia University, to other Big East Conference university cities, Morgantown's cost of living comes in slightly higher.Syracuse, New York, which registered a composite index of 100.4,came the closest to the national average and to Morgantown's cost of living.The newest universities to the Big East Conference, Cincinnati, Louisville, and South Florida, all came in with lower total index levels.In fact, Cincinnati came in with the lowest at 7 percent below the national average of participating areas and 8.1 percent below Morgantown.
