Résumé

Introduction: Immigrant parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience stigma, decreased quality of life, and poor parental efficacy. Parent coaching is an intervention that has been shown to increase self-efficacy and decrease parent stress. The primary aims of this study were to explore the outcomes and experiences of a coaching intervention on immigrant caregivers of children with ASD.Methods: Researchers used a mixed methods case study design with one participant, an immigrant mother of a child with autism. The researchers engaged the participant in five virtual sessions. First, they administered the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) to measure perceived satisfaction and performance with select tasks and to identify goals for coaching. They also administered the Parent Effort Scale (PES), Family Quality of Life SurvEy (FQoL), and Parent Empowerment and Efficacy Measure (PEEM). The next three sessions consisted of coaching interventions to guide the participant with identifying strategies and resources to better support their child and work toward identified goals. The last session consisted of conducting a semi-structured interview and readministering the assessment tools. Researchers used descriptive statistics to analyze quantitative data gathered from the assessment tools. They used content analysis to analyze qualitative data from the post-intervention interview. Results: The participant identified a goal of supporting her child with dressing, showering, and toileting. Scores on the COPM, FQoL, and PEEM increased, indicating increased satisfaction, performance, and parenting efficacy. Scores on the PES decreased, indicating a decreased amount of parent effort needed to support the child’s participation in self-care tasks. Qualitative data revealed that the participant had an overall positive experience with the coaching intervention despite some challenges. Conclusion: Results from this study indicate that coaching may be an effective intervention to use with immigrant caregivers of children with ASD. Occupational therapy practitioners can use this intervention when working with families to target performance goals for children and improve overall parental efficacy and quality of life. The limitations of the study provide insights into how to improve future coaching intentions used. This project was approved by the Midwestern University Institutional Review Board, #23038
