35-36 Hallgate, Doncaster, South Yorkshire: Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The desk-based assessment was requested in relation to the planned redevelopment of the site and comprised historical and cartographic research, along with a site visit. The specific aims are: * to assess the survival and potential significance of buried archaeological remains within the application area; * to assess the historic significance of the standing buildings; * to assess the extent of impact likely to be caused by the proposed development. Roman, medieval and early-post-medieval activity is known to have occurred within the immediate vicinity of the proposal area although the site itself remained undeveloped until the construction of South Parade House during the second quarter of the 19th century. The Majestic Cinema occupied the site by 1923 but, by 1934, this had been replaced by the Gaumont Palace. The building has many aspects of architectural merit but has been heavily altered, including both the external entrance facade and the internal layout. Fragmentary elements of the original design do remain and the backstage (non-public) areas still retain their historic character, albeit with little ornamentation. The impact of the deep basements along the south and north sides of the building and the ground reduction in the auditorium area of the site will have had a severe impact upon earlier archaeological deposits or structures. Given the depths at which sub-surface archaeological deposits associated with the Roman period have been recovered from the Hallgate area, the potential exists for archaeological deposits to survive within the site. The archaeological potential may be greater within the alley at the west of the site, as ground levels within this area were not truncated during the construction of the cinema.
