Evaluation at Land north of Middleton Road, Pickering, North Yorkshire
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
An Archaeological Evaluation by Trial Trenching as undertaken by MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd., on land north of Middleton Road, Pickering, North Yorkshire in October 2024. The evaluation was undertaken to inform North Yorkshire Council and the client of the archaeological potential of the site and to allow a reasoned decision to be made regarding the need for further archaeological work, in advance of residential development. The site had previously been the subject of a Desk Based Assessment and Geophysical Survey, the latter of which identified features of likely archaeological origin within the south-western corner. The positions of all trenches were located using a Trimble GPS Rover and the trench area scanned for underground services. Trenches 1-5 & 7-17 measured 40m by 2m and Trench 6 measured 15m by 15m. Once positioned the trenches were excavated using a tracked 360 mechanical excavator, fitted with a wide toothless bucket operating under close archaeological supervision. In each trench, soils were removed down to archaeologically perceived natural horizon and subsequently the exposed surfaces were cleaned, photographed and recorded. All excavation and recording were carried out in line with the approved Written Scheme of Investigation Seventeen Trial Trenches were excavated across the site, most of which contained medieval or post-medieval agricultural features including furrows. Features deemed to be of archaeological origin were identified in five trenches and largely correlated with the results of the Geophysical Survey. Excavated features are likely to relate to an enclosure of late prehistoric or Romano-British date which, given the scarcity of finds and associated features, is likely to be agricultural in nature and may be concerned with the control of livestock. The evaluation was undertaken to inform North Yorkshire Council and the client of the archaeological potential of the site and to allow a reasoned decision to be made regarding the need for further archaeological work, in advance of residential development. Further archaeological work may be required if planning permsissoion granted
