Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment of the former Pearl Works, 17-21 Eyre Lane, Sheffield, South Yorkshire

In December 2006, ARCUS were commissioned by BDP on behalf of their client to undertake a desk-based assessment of the former Pearl Works, 17-21 Eyre Lane, Sheffield, South Yorkshire (SK 3537 8676). The assessment was required in relation to a planning application for the redevelopment of the site, which lies within the Cultural Industries Quarter Conservation Area, and comprised a site visit, along with documentary and cartographic research. During the medieval period, the proposal area appears to have been part of the deer park maintained by the manorial lords of Sheffield and is thus unlikely to have been the focus of settlement during this period. The site was located within Alsop Fields during the post-medieval period and remained largely undeveloped pasture in 1771, although part of the grounds of a detached structure may have been within the site boundary at that date. Urbanisation occurred throughout the immediate area during the late 18th century and the site was fully developed by 1808. The nature of this initial phase remains unclear, and while it is possible that domestic structures were part of the early 19th-century development, industrial buildings appeared to occupy the plot by 1853. In 1890, the site had been redeveloped further and had been absorbed into the Arundel Works cutlery factory. By 1923, the late 19th-century buildings had replaced by the Pearl Works. The latter appear to represent a single phase of construction, suggesting that the site had been cleared of standing buildings prior to this redevelopment. A basement level is visible at the rear of the Pearl Works and it is possible that 19th-century archaeological deposits will have been impacted substantially by the construction of the later works. However, this issue cannot be determined on the basis of the current evidence. Further archaeological evaluation would be required to establish the extent and condition of any surviving 19th-century archaeological deposits. A 1999 survey conducted by the Royal Commission for the Historic Monuments of England concluded that the Pearl Works were a good example of an early 20 th- century cutlery factory within Sheffield. However, the standing buildings are currently in a poor condition and do not appear to be of key archaeological, historical or architectural significance.
