Study of Knowledge about Breastfeeding among Expectant Mothers.
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Quantitative research was carried out seeking to assess the knowledge about breastfeeding among expectant mothers. Breastfeeding promotion is defined by WHO as an exclusively important task in health care to improve mother’s and infant’s health. As it is proved by scientific research performed in Lithuania and in the world, one of the most important factors making impact on nursing and its duration is mother’s knowledge about breastfeeding. Objective of the work – to assess the knowledge about breastfeeding among expectant mothers. Tasks of the work: 1) to analyse the knowledge about nursing and factors inducing lactation among expectant mothers; 2) to elucidate the advantages of breastfeeding from the point of view of expectant mothers; 3) to assess a preparedness of expectant mothers to breast feed their infants. In order to implement the study, theoretical analysis of scientific literature was performed and quantitative research was carried out. 32 expectant mothers attending the Prenatal Clinic at the Public Institution Utena Primary Health Care Centre were questioned in writing. The questionnaire survey was carried out from 04 Nov 2015 to 11 Dec 2015. The method of statistical analysis was used for presentation of the study results. Statistical data analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel. Results of the study showed that most of the respondents know such factors inducing nursing and lactation as free nursing regimen, early first nursing and sufficiently long duration of nursing from one breast but the importance of skin to skin contact is known to hardly more than one quarter of the respondents only. Although most of the respondents know such advantages of breastfeeding as convenience and economic benefit but they do not have sufficient knowledge about the health benefits of breastfeeding for infants and mothers. Moreover, more than 70 percent of mothers-to-be do not understand that a nutritional value of breast milk and infant formulas is different. The study disclosed that expectant mothers are not ready enough to breast feed their infants because they do not have enough knowledge about positive impact of breastfeeding on infant’s and mother’s health, about duration of exclusive breastfeeding and extended breastfeeding recommended by WHO, they wrongly think that fluid intake can affect the amount of breast milk produced.
