DEVELOPMENT OF LOW SMOKE ZERO HALOGEN POLYMER COMPOSITE FOR WIRE AND CABLE APPLICATION
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Polymers are used in a multitude of applications in our daily lives, including components in wire and cable industries. While polymers are very versatile and useful materials, they are not thermally stable and when exposed to heat, can break down and lead to fire spread. In order to overcome this, flame retardant additives are introduced to a polymer system, providing flame retardancy. However, flame retardants that pose a risk to the environment and human health are in the process of being banned by many governments. Low smoke zero halogen flame retardants do not pose a large risk to human health and the environment, and the motivation for this study arises from the need of continuing development into flame resistant materials that use flame retardants that have no known environmental effects. This thesis studies the capabilities of low smoke zero halogen polymer composites in a few areas such as flame retardancy, thermal stability, and mechanical performance. The change in flame retardancy, thermal stability, and mechanical performance from neat material to polymer composite is characterized, along with how different processing conditions of the composite affect the compatibility of polymer and additive. How well the polymer composites perform compared to targeted performance values is evaluated, and an analysis is completed to determine the specific effect each additive has on the outcome of the polymer composites performance. The thesis provided a basis of knowledge behind the mechanisms of flame retardant additives, and supplied information on how different additives could be used in a multitude of polymer matrices. The work also demonstrated the effectiveness of phosphorus based and nitrogen based flame retardants had on the flame retardancy and thermal stability of a polyolefin matrix blend. This study focused on a small segment of the large variety of flame retardant additives available to use, in a multitude of differing variations. The research into developing flame retardant systems is an expanding field.
