Learning to Stay Ahead of the Curve: A Netnographic Analysis of Professional Development in English Language Teacher Chats on Twitter
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
This exploratory study in English language teaching (ELT) self-directed teacher development examines secondary data to provide an awareness of self-directed professional development (PD) networks in a digital social learning system whose ecology is not produced or implemented with the intention of conducting research. This study also investigates how the Twitter ecology supports and suppresses chat participants through a sociomaterial analysis of human and non-human assemblages. This mixed-method netnographic study demonstrates how ELT Twitter chats are designed; what mechanisms reproduce certain patterns of response; how ELTs experience self-directed PD through Twitter chats; whether the ELT chat experience differs for influencers and lurkers; and to what extent participation in chats influences ELTs beyond Twitter to their interests, teaching practice, and teaching philosophy. Framed by actor-network theory, landscapes of practice, and posthumanism, the study involved tracking self-directed teacher development in ELT Twitter chats for three months, analysis of the social network and sentiment analysis of the chat, discourse analysis of the chat transcripts, and semi-structured interviews. The study collectively uncovered human and non-human patterns of communication and response, themes, hashtags, as well as influencers and lurkers in the chats. Results reveal trends that indicate ELTs benefit from ELT Twitter learning networks because of the opportunities to connect with other professionals as well as the topics discussed. ELTs who experience more affordances with the Twitter platform and employment demonstrate more knowledgeability (Trayner & Hutchinson, 2015) across topics that extend beyond the methods and strategies for teaching language. Those with fewer affordances with Twitter and with more job precarity tend to disseminate learning in places other than Twitter. ELTs indicated a preference for Twitter as the first place to explore self-directed development, but were not always aware of the impact Twitter had on their communication. This study’s significance in the area of language teacher self-directed PD draws attention to the immediacy of Twitter and its affordances for individuals who participate in self-directed PD that is unique to their context, “just in time”, and anonymous, while also challenging the conventions of the anthropocentric approach that dominates PD self-directed development research. ELTs, którzy mają większe możliwości korzystania z platformy Twitter i zatrudnienia, wykazują większą wiedzę (Trayner & Hutchinson, 2015) w zakresie wielu przedmiotów, która wykracza poza metody i strategie nauczania języka. Osoby z mniejszymi możliwościami korzystania z Twittera i z większą niepewnością pracy mają tendencję do rozpowszechniania wiedzy w miejscach innych niż Twitter.
