Cross-cultural Contact: Teodor's Journey Across Continents
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Using as its focal point the many renditions of the story of a maiden who engages in and wins a series of debates, this dissertation examines the processes involved in the translatio of information and the negotiation of cultural contact. Each telling of the story, from the thirteenth-century Castilian versions that emerged from Arabic predecessors to the Yucatec Mayan texts that were produced between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, captures a moment in the complex relationships that formed in and characterised the spaces of contact from which the texts emerged. Comparing the renditions of the story not only reveals differences and similarities between the cultures and their positions with respect to each other, but also differences and similarities in the ways in which they navigated cultural exchange. The first chapter draws tools from translation/adaptation studies and postcolonial theory in order develop a framework from which to conduct this comparison, linking translatio studii and translatio potestatis. The Castilian stories of the maiden are the primary subjects of the second chapter; in part due to the historically close relationship between Castile and its Islamicate neighbours as well as the former’s aspiration to exceed the latter’s international cultural standing, the Castilian stories reveal a process of information transfer that sought to obscure the story’s origins. In contrast, the Yucatec Mayan stories, the subjects of the third chapter, contain modifications meant to accommodate local audiences, but also juxtapose material, highlighting connections between concepts and words of diverse origins. The differences in the approaches to the telling of the maiden’s story are a result of local traditions and methodologies as well as contemporary circumstances—unlike Islamdom and Castile, where each controlled certain regions, the Spanish who first introduced the story to the Maya dominated Yucatán politically and culturally, positioning Maya knowledge-keepers as intermediaries between Spanish and Maya systems. The many versions of the maiden’s story encapsulate and exemplify various practices of knowledge transfer, practices that offer refreshing possibilities for present-day cross-cultural communication.
