The Hunt for Gold and the Road to the Establishment of British Columbia
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The thesis deals with the historical development of the Canadian province of British Columbia up to its entry into the Canadian Confederation in 1871. The introductory part focuses on the early exploratory voyages that opened the region to European interests, and on the increasing involvement of European powers, especially Great Britain in the area of present-day Vancouver Island and surrounding regions, where the first settlement efforts emerged. The thesis further analyses the events of the War of 1812, which significantly influenced the political and economic development of this borderland area and shaped its relations with neighbouring powers. Special attention is paid to the presidency of James K. Polk, during which efforts to annex British Columbia to the United States intensified. These efforts culminated in the Oregon Treaty of 1846, which established the boundary between British and American territories and created the conditions for the province's subsequent development.
