THE DECORATED TRAPEZOIDAL PENDANT FROM THE PRAGUE CULTURE SETTLEMENT OF KHRINNYKY 8

The paper deals with the decorated trapezoidal pendant discovered at the Prague culture settlement of Khrinnyky 8, located in the Za Lisom tract. The site was excavated by Dr. Denis Kozak in 2005, when a pithouse with an adobe stove was discovered. Based on the pottery, the assemblage was dated to the first half of the 6th century. The pendant, ornamented with seven embossed circles containing central dots, was found within the fill of the structure at floor level. Three additional perforations along the lower edge likely served for suspending supplementary elements. Comparative analysis of the Khrinnyky pendant focuses on its dimensions, shape, and decorative features (notably the embossed circular motifs). The closest parallels are found among artifacts from the East European champlevй enamels style. They originate from sites and assemblages associated with the Late Zarubyntsi and Kyiv cultures as well as hoards such as Moshchyno, Mezhyhirya, and Briansk. Scholars generally date these finds to the 2th — early 4th centuries. Trapezoidal pendants featuring circular ornamentation are still in use in the early medieval period. However, such motifs occur infrequently and typically combined with other decorative elements, rather than forming a distinct stylistic group. Such pendants are more commonly found in the sites of western regions of Prague culture. In the territory of modern Ukraine such examples are known only from sites dating to the final quarter of the 1st millennium AD. Actually while trapezoidal pendants are relatively widespread in early Slavic material culture they are uncommon in Prague culture contexts in Ukraine. The presence of this pendant in a Prague cultural context may be interpreted in several ways. The first interpretation is that of a «relic» — pendants with purely circular decoration may have persisted into the early medieval period. A second version is that this artifact was a «reused» object of the Late Roman period during the early Middle Ages. In any case, the discovery of this trapezoidal pendant at the Khrinnyky settlement is notable. Jewelry is rare on Slavic sites in this region, which complicates efforts to establish a precise chronology of early Slavic antiquities.
