Abstract
A series of excellent workshop sessions was organized by James Winkler (SmithKline Beecham) and Ken Tramposch (Bristol-Myers Squibb). In the one on “Cell adhesion molecules and leukocyte trafficking”, co-chaired by Andrew Issekutz (Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada) and Denis Schrier (Parke-Davis, Ann Arbor, Michigan), Mike Willwand of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) presented an interesting study regarding the induction of CD43 (Leukosialin, Sialophorin) by IL-1. A DNA expression array was differentially probed with reverse transcribed mRNA from synovial fibroblasts stimulated with IL-1 at various time points. At 3 h, both ICAM-1 and CD43 were upregulated. Immunohistochemical analysis of synovial and gingival fibroblasts after IL-1 treatment gave similar results. CD 43 protein was upregulated in a temporal and dose-dependent manner. These findings may indicate an additional means by which blood derived cells adhere to fibroblasts and initiate and/or perpetuate the inflammatory response in inflammatory processes.
