Abstract
Por sorprendente que pueda parecer y pese a la ingente cantidad de canonizados, el futbol y los futbolistas carecen de santo patron. Lo poseen los atletas (Sebastian), los musicos (Cecilia), las amas de casa (Ana), o los funcionarios (Mateo). Tambien hay santos para escritores (Juan Evangelista), marinos (Telmo), estudiantes (Tomas de Aquino), veterinarios (Eloy), agricultores (Isidro Labrador), arquitectos (apostol Tomas), bordadoras (Clara), costureras (Cecilia), cerrajeros (Pedro), choferes (Crsitobal), actores (Juan Bosco), carteros (Gabriel) o artilleros (Barbara). Por si un solo santo no fuera suficiente, hay profesiones con dos patronos, como taberneros (Marta y Teodoto), abogados (Raimundo de Penafort y Tomas Moro), bancarios (Mateo y Miguel) o cocineros (Lorenzo y Marta), y hasta algunas con 3, como es el caso de los dentistas (Apolonio, Cosme y Damian). Tambien los gremios o actividades mas nuevas quisieron contar con su protector, y asi tenemos a los fotografos (Veronica), e incluso a los locutores de radio (Gabriel Arcangel). Incluso los animales domesticos tienen su santo (Antonio Abad). Pero el futbol y los futbolistas, pese a su enorme arraigo popular, nada de nada. ?Acaso nadie se preocupo de ello durante los anos del nacionalcatolicismo?, pensara alguien. ?Ni siquiera cuando Franco paseaba bajo palio y los obispos saludaban brazo en alto, volvieron su vista los bienpensantes hacia el mundo del balon?. Pues si y no, seria la respuesta. Pensaron en el patronazgo, es cierto, aunque sobre este punto, como sobre otros muchos, el universo balompedico hizo gala de su tradicional desunion. Y eso que habia un martir tan propicio como para antojarse fabricado ex profeso.
