Il peut exister des situations ou la forme canonique ordinaire ne peut etre observee sans de graves inconvenients parce que le couple ne peut aller trouver un pretre ou un diacre qualifies. Le canon 1116 enumere les exigences pour la forme canonique extraordinaire, i.e. l'echange de consentements devant les seuls temoins. Ceci est possible lorsqu'on est dans une situation in mortis periculo, ou si les conditions necessaires sont presentes en-dehors du danger de mort, qu'il est prevu que la situation durera un mois et qu'une personne competente ne peut etre presente ou contactee sans grave inconvenient. Lorsque ces conditions sont presentes, le couple a le droit de contracter un mariage valide et licite devant les seuls temoins. Aucune dispense ou permission de l'autorite ecclesiastique competente n'est necessaire. Ces mariages doivent etre inscrits dans le registre de mariages. L'A. recommande que les fideles soient instruits de la forme extraordinaire.
