La peninsule du Niagara, ou une grande partie de l'industrie vinicole canadienne est localisee, a connu une augmentation de la frequence du temps sec et chaud pendant les etes tout au long de la derniere decennie. Bien que la region soit en general fraiche et humide, l'arboriculture et la viticulture reconsiderent l'utilisation de l'irrigation et la necessite de trouver de meilleures strategies d'irrigation. Des experimentations comparant differentes strategies d'irrigation deficitaire de type PRD (Partial Rootzone Drying) etRDI (Regulated Deficit Irrigation) ont ete entreprises entre 2006 et 2008 dans une vigne commerciale en utilisant deux cultivars le Cabernet-Sauvignon et le Sauvignon. Cinq traitements ont ete testes sur le Cabernet-Sauvignon: un controle non irrigue, un systeme PRD, une irrigation a la transpiration maximale (100% ETc) et deux niveaux de RDI (50% et 25% ETc). Les memes traitements ont ete appliques sur le Sauvignon excepte le traitement 50 % ETc. Les traitements d'irrigation ont commence juste apres la nouaison et ont continue jusqu'au debut du mois de septembre. Le calcul de la quantite d'eau requise a ete base sur une estimation de l'evapotranspiration (ETo) Penman-Monteith. L'humidite du sol et la physiologie de la vigne (potentiel hydrique foliaire et taux de transpiration) pour les traitements de PRD etaient generalement moindre que les vignes avec les traitements avec 100% ETc, mais plus eleves que les traitements non irrigues et similaires a ceux 50% ETc et 25% ETc. Presque tous les traitements ont montre des differences par rapport aux vignes non irriguees en termes de composition des raisins et d'analyse sensorielle des vins. Les strategies RDI etaient plus constantes que les traitements traitements PRD en matiere d'effets sur la physiologie generale et la composition des raisins. De facon generale, l'utilisation d'une Irrigation Deficitaire Regule ou du Dessechement Partiel de la Zone Radiculaire, dans des climats frais pendant des annees seches et chaudes ou les mesures ecophysiologiques traduisent une contrainte hydrique moderee, peut ameliorer la composition du raisin.
