Cet article est le fruit d'une rencontre avec le groupe de recherche « Cinéma et oralité » du département d'histoire de l'art et d'études cinématographiques de l'université de Montréal dirigé par Germain Lacasse. La conférence, organisée autour des pratiques orales du cinéma et de la figure du bonimenteur, nous a incité à reconsidérer l'œuvre de Jean Rouch à partir des pratiques orales qui accompagnent la grande majorité de ses films. Partis du constat que les multiples débats qui ont jalonné la production cinématographique de ce réalisateur étaient organisés autour des questions d'appartenance à un genre, à des catégories, comme le cinéma vérité, la docu-fiction, frontières qu'il s'est toujours évertué à franchir, nous avons voulu aborder son œuvre sous un aspect encore peu révélé. Historiquement, il a bousculé toutes ces classifications pour créer un cinéma où l'imagination, l'utopie et la tradition orale étaient les liens qui unissaient toute son œuvre. Après avoir explicité notre position singulière au sein de la grande famille recomposée par Jean et la spécificité de notre démarche au sein de notre discipline, l'anthropologie visuelle, nous aborderons l'analyse des différents aspects des pratiques orales initiées par Rouch à partir de deux films Ambara Dama et Moi un noir. Cette comparaison peut surprendre puisque nous ne respectons pas les critères géographiques, stylistiques et thématiques qui jalonnent la plupart des analyses proposées sur J.Rouch. Nous avons considéré l'œuvre de Jean Rouch comme une collection « d'objets inquiétants », identiques et différents, composés, ciselés, façonnés par la même énergie et la même exigence.
