La théorie de la classe de loisir (1899) a tracé la voie à la sociologie du loisir au XXe siècle d’au moins deux manières. D’abord, en décrivant un type de comportement de loisir attribuable spécifiquement aux élites, en opposition avec la culture traditionnelle et la culture de masse. Complétée par les observations de d’autres précurseurs (Lundberg, 1934 et Hoggart, 1957) son approche permet d’élaborer une typologie des comportements de loisir dans la société industrielle : l’ostentation et la rivalité pécuniaire correspondent au type aristocratique, la consommation de masse et le conformisme au type bourgeois, la tradition et les valeurs pré-modernes au type populaire. Ensuite, en s’intéressant aux mécanismes du changement socioculturel, qui s’appuient pour Veblen sur l’émulation. Il dénonce ainsi le conservatisme des élites, d’autant plus dommageable d’un point de vue économique et social que les conduites des membres d’une classe s’alignent sur celles de la classe qui lui est immédiatement supérieure. Sa condamnation n’est cependant pas sans équivoque. Bien que la classe de loisir entrave l’évolution culturelle par son inertie propre, elle constitue l’institution la plus susceptible de faire éclore de nouvelles pratiques. Malgré son caractère improductif, le loisir élitaire reste donc au fondement de l’innovation culturelle.
