Abstract
Thoracoscopic thoracic duct ligation and pericardectomy with cisterna chyli ablation have been recently described as minimally invasive alternatives to open surgical procedures. Glue embolization of the cisterna chyli and thoracic duct via percutaneous puncture using fluoroscopic guidance has been described for treatment of traumatic and non-traumatic chylothorax in humans, and has gained popularity over thoracic duct ligation because of its minimally invasive approach. Both dogs and cats presenting with idiopathic chylothorax are candidates for cisterna chyli and thoracic duct glue embolization. Lymphangiography is a helpful step prior to performing cisterna chyli and thoracic duct glue embolization as it provides the surgeon with relevant lymphatic anatomy. Routine techniques are used to perform an exploratory celiotomy and all abdominal structures are thoroughly examined. Once cisterna chyli and thoracic duct anatomy have been verified, the embolization procedure can be performed.
