Cet article est consacré à l’étude de la principale instance représentative des éducateurs de la Protection judiciaire de la jeunesse (PJJ) : le syndicat national des personnels de l’Éducation surveillée-PJJ (SNPES-PJJ). L’identité professionnelle de ces éducateurs est caractérisée par une ambivalence fondamentale : s’ils sont formellement rattachés au ministère de la Justice, leur syndicat majoritaire est quant à lui affilié à l’une des plus importantes centrales syndicales de l’Éducation Nationale : la Fédération syndicale unitaire (FSU). À partir d’un regard socio-historique, nous analysons les hésitations stratégiques du SNPES, pris dans une tension entre deux logiques distinctes de revendication : une logique statutaire, attentive à la défense des intérêts catégoriels du groupe professionnel, et une logique identitaire, attentive au sens de son mandat, ancré dans la mémoire historique de son institution d’appartenance. Ce faisant, nous interrogeons les liens entre activité syndicale et identité professionnelle, tout en offrant un éclairage singulier sur les reconfigurations d’un groupe professionnel emblématique de la justice des mineurs française.
