Depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les crèches souffrent d’une mauvaise réputation, car elles étaient, aux yeux de psychiatres de l’époque, responsables de carences affectives graves imputées à la forme de l’accueil collectif. Depuis le milieu des années 60, des psychologues ont transformé le modèle hygiéniste réduisant l’enfant de 0 à 3 ans que l’on accueille à la crèche à un corps à baigner, à nourrir et à changer. Cet article cherche à interroger le soubassement naturalisant de la fonction d’auxiliaire de puériculture à travers ce que les auteures appellent le « paradigme mère-enfant » qui fait de la crèche un pis-aller et de l’auxiliaire, un substitut toujours imparfait. A partir de travaux de recherche empirique, et notamment d’une recherche-action conduite depuis deux ans dans la région parisienne, elles ont pu établir la manière dont le point de vue, l’expérience et les savoir-faire uniques des auxiliaires de puériculture ont été étouffées, réduits au silence et méconnus. C’est en donnant à entendre leur « voix » que les rapports naturalisants ont pu être remis en question, puis invalidés, ce qui a permis d’accroître, par là même, leur empowerment professionnel et en termes de genre.
