“La Geste d'Asdiwal” de Levi-Strauss est parfois considere comme l'illustration la plus significative de la methode structuraliste : en s'interessant aux variations mythologiques des populations de la cote du Nord-ouest canadien, Levi-Strauss demontre, a la suite de Boas, qu'elles s'eclairent a la lumiere des differences d'organisation sociale ; en soutenant que le mythe se prete a l'etude de la pensee, il suggere que la pensee mythique agit sur des objets de sa propre creation. Cet article examine un mythe qui semble etre l'inversion condensee des elements fondateurs de la version tsimshiane d'Asdiwal. Collecte par Waldemar Jochelson en 1910 au Kamtchatka (Extreme-Orient russe), ce “petit” mythe pose la question des contacts historiques entre les peuples vivant de part et d'autre du Pacifique Nord. Bien qu'aucune relation historique n'a ete etablie a ce jour, les nombreux paralleles et inversions existant entre la version tsimshiane d'Asdiwal et le mythe itelmene suggerent une relation entre les recits. Au-dela de la validite des theories levi-straussiennes, ce mythe questionne donc les implications de notre comprehension de l'histoire et de la conscience collective. Si les recits tsimshians et kamtchatkiens sont lies historiquement et que la consistance du processus d'inversion confirme les principes structuralistes, ces derniers resident-ils dans la structure elementaire du langage, dans les conditions fondamentales des societes et de l'environnement ou bien dans la pensee ? La question, bien sur, reste ouverte.
