L’idée d’Europe au XIXème siècle rencontre de fait l´Europe des monarchies, que Victor Hugo avait déjà appelé « L’Europe des rois ». Afin d’ouvrir un nouvel horizon de la recherche, il est pourtant nécessaire de déplacer la perspective d’une « Europe des monarchies » vers une « Europe des dynasties ». Les liens entre familles royales et princières ont permis de créer des réseaux et d’établir des communications au-delà des frontières. Leur sentiment de partage, de communion s’étendant à l’échelle continentale explique que les dynasties ont constitué un facteur paradoxal mais bien réel du processus d’européanisation. Dans cette perspective, il convient de penser d’où « sort » ce XIXe siècle des dynasties et de le rattacher au-delà du traumatisme vécu de la Révolution, à une idée de l’« Europe », bien présente au XVIIIème siècle dans une réalité, dépassant la simple projection nobiliaire. L’Europe était un réseau aux dimensions sociale, culturelle et politique des plus vifs, sinon comment comprendre que l’idée royale, malgré le choc révolutionnaire ait pu résister à une telle puissance désorganisatrice et inventive à la fois consécutive à 1789.
