Le present article resume les conclusions de le document de recherche intitulee: Destinations initiales et redistribution des principaux groupes d'immigrants au Canada : changements au cours des deux dernieres decennies. En 1981, environ 58 % des immigrants arrives au Canada au cours des 10 annees precedentes vivaient a Toronto, a Vancouver et a Montreal; en 2001, cette proportion etait passee a 74 % (Statistique Canada 2003), ce qui a declenche une discussion sur les avantages d'une (Citoyennete et Immigration Canada (CIC) 2001). Les politiques visant a orienter les immigrants vers d'autres destinations que les villes carrefour de plusieurs pays occidentaux sont axees sur le choix de la destination finale et peu d'efforts ont ete deployes pour influencer la mobilite par la suite. Mais ces politiques n'auront les resultats attendus que si les regions qui ne servent pas de porte d'entree arrivent a conserver les immigrants ou a maintenir l'equilibre entre la migration interne et la migration externe. A cette fin, la presente etude examine dans quelle mesure la concentration geographique des principaux groupes d'immigrants arrives au Canada au cours des deux dernieres decennies s'est modifiee au fil du temps et procede pour ce faire a une comparaison entre les immigrants arrives pendant les annees 1970, 1980 et 1990, d'abord au point de vue de leur concentration dans les destinations initiales, puis de leur dispersion geographique subsequente. Elle accorde une attention particuliere au profil de dispersion des groupes dont le lieu d'etablissement initial avait ete influence par des politiques gouvernementales et examine le role des collectivites d'immigrants deja etablies dans la repartition geographique des nouveaux immigrants.
