Cet article tablit des liens entre certains concepts archivistiques et la thorie et la pratique modernes en conservation et en musologie, et illustre ces concepts partir d'exemples tirs des archives du Manitoba.L'alphabtisation matrielle constitue la capacit de dcoder et d'interprter l'importance de la composition matrielle, de la construction et de la condition physique d'un document concret.Le choix du matriau, de la technologie et du design par le crateur seront influencs par le besoin de communiquer au sein du contexte socio-culturel contemporain.Ds leur cration, les documents se transforment cause de la dtrioration naturelle, de l'usure, et d'altrations dlibres par leurs crateurs, les utilisateurs et les gardiens subsquents.Les signes de la cration et des transformations font partie de l'histoire du document, et les dcisions prsentes et passes des crateurs et gardiens peuvent avoir un impact significatif sur l'interprtation future du document.Pendant qu'elles conservent les documents, les archives modifient aussi ces signes au moyen de mdiations physiques et intellectuelles.L'auteure se penche brivement sur la faon dont les pratiques archivistiques tiennent compte des dimensions matrielles des documents, au moment de l'valuation, de l'examen, de la description et dans les traces de leurs interventions.Dans leur forme originale, les documents peuvent communiquer fortement le sens entre les gnrations et les cultures, en offrant aux chercheurs un contact personnel et direct avec le pass.En voyant les documents comme lments de la culture matrielle, on peut reconnatre et valuer la forme physique comme source majeure du contexte, et par l mieux prserver la signification des documents.
