Abstract
De l’alliance sans lendemain au « Vive le Québec libre ! ». Après le traité de Paris de 1763, pendant presque un siècle il y a peu d’échanges entre les deux communautés, même si les Canadiens n’oublient pas leur ancienne patrie. Suite à la défaite française de 1871 contre l’Allemagne, certains Français redécouvrent un peu le Canada français. C’est au cours de cette période que naît Charles de Gaulle. Issu d’une famille conservatrice dont le père enseigne l’histoire, le jeune de Gaulle est très tôt exposé à l’histoire du Canada. Dès 1940, il se tourne vers les Canadiens français pour leur lancer un appel à l’aide ; en vain. Ces derniers sont au départ favorables à Pétain, mais ils finissent par se ranger derrière le Général, celui-ci recevant tout au long de la guerre l’appui d’Ottawa et du Canada anglophone. En 1960, après son retour au pouvoir, de Gaulle effectue une troisième visite au Canada. Il en conclut que la France a peu de chose à attendre du Canada anglais. Elle doit désormais aider le Canada français dans son effort d’affranchissement, quelles qu’en soient les conséquences pour les relations avec Ottawa.
