Alors que les autorités incluent le transport en commun dans leurs plans et politiques comme un élément clé pour favoriser des comportements de mobilité plus durables, la pérennité de son financement est constamment remise en question. Cette incohérence entre les discours politique et technique a poussé neuf sociétés de transport collectif de six régions métropolitaines du Québec à entreprendre un exercice d’estimation des contributions du transport en commun au développement durable. Cet article présente d’abord le processus de sélection des indicateurs. Les méthodologies sont détaillées pour certains indicateurs : le carburant et l’espace non consommés et les gaz à effet de serre (GES) inhérents, la contribution au volume quotidien d’activité physique des usagers, l’accessibilité aux arrêts de transport en commun, la couverture du réseau routier par le réseau de transport en commun, les économies quotidiennes d’argent et la sécurité du transport en commun. L’article expose finalement les différents défis conceptuels, méthodologiques et informationnels ayant influencé le développement du système d’indicateurs.
