Abstract Crystallization of amorphous alloys occurs via nucleation and subsequent grain growth. Recent studies on Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni-Al bulk amorphous alloys suggest that the ordering processes upon annealing have two possible mechanisms. One is the well-known “long-range ordering” dominated by nucleation and grain growth. Another is “local ordering” without significant requirement of nucleation to form critical nuclei, which leads to a “locally ordered” structure composed of medium-range or short-range ordered clusters. This locally ordered structure is more stable than the amorphous phase and displays a distinct glass transition but no characteristics of a crystalline phase such as clearly visible peaks in the x-ray diffraction pattern or diffraction spots in the transmission electron diffraction pattern.
