Abstract
Résumé Ce texte vise à comprendre comment les couples franco-catholiques du Québec sont parvenus, malgré un retard certain, à contrôler leur fécondité dans un contexte socio-religieux particulièrement contraignant. Tirant parti du fichier des micro-données du recensement de 1971 ainsi que d’entrevues en profondeur, les auteurs identifient les groupes les plus susceptibles de transgresser les règles strictes édictées par l’Église catholique et démontrent le caractère souvent tortueux des chemins empruntés par les couples autant que par le clergé : choix d’un confesseur plus indulgent, principes moraux adaptables selon les situations, actions à double effet, autant d’exemples de stratagèmes utilisés pour parvenir à contrôler la fécondité sans compromettre sa fidélité à la doctrine catholique. L’arrivée de la pilule et la publication de l’Encyclique Humanae vitae marquent la fin du recours à de tels subterfuges et l’appropriation, par les couples, de cette question désormais devenue objet de morale personnelle.
