Abstract
Apresenta-se a caracterização do conceito de New Public Management (NPM), a partir da experiência na administração pública do Canadá, como estratégia importante na gestão dos órgãos do Estado, considerando as demandas dos cidadãos. Faz-se um breve relato das reformas administrativas ocorridas no Brasil, com ênfase a partir de 1994, que visavam a melhorar a qualidade dos serviços prestados pela administração pública. Por fim, como exemplo concreto da aplicação do conceito de NPM, menciona-se o Programa Poupatempo, implementado nos anos 90 pelo governo do Estado de São Paulo, como experiência bem-sucedida da administração pública gerencial.Abstract: It is presented the characterization of the concept of New Public Management (NPM) which was implanted by the Canadian public administration as an important strategy for public affairs, concerning the demands of citizens for better services. This article starts with a brief report on the reforms of public services in Brazil as from 1994. I mention the Poupatempo program, as an example of a succeeded practical experience of NPM, which can be considered a good example of modern public management applied in the 90’s by the government of the State of São Paulo.
