Este articulo expone la experiencia de la Fundacion CIENTEC, en Costa Rica, con la evolucion de un sitio web de divulgacion y aprendizaje de las ciencias, la matematica y la tecnologia, inicialmente creado como un apoyo al trabajo presencial de esta organizacion privada de interes publico, que inesperadamente cambia para tornarse en un �Centro Virtual de Ciencias�, con una dinamica propia (www.cientec.or.cr). El avance del portal se expone desde multiples opticas: la vision tecnica del diseno, para las capacidades y las herramientas del usuario promedio, pasando por una perspectiva de la generacion de los contenidos, que involucra estrategias no convencionales y a los colaboradores externos, hasta la interconexion con otras instituciones y plataformas, que permiten la creacion, exposicion e intercambio de productos en otros formatos. Un proceso que pasa de la concepcion unidireccional, descrita por Drumsgoole (2006), de la Web 1.0 al nuevo modelo en red Web 2.0. En el marco de la �Declaracion de Toronto�, el portal de CIENTEC se ubica entre las estrategias que facilitan la creacion de comunidades virtuales y fisicas, amplia los espacios de aprendizaje y discusion de los ciudadanos y sirve de apoyo para enfrentar los retos locales y globales, con conocimiento e inventiva.
