Abstract
Cet article se veut à la fois une étude de la trajectoire interlinguistique de Jorge Semprún, écrivain espagnol d’expression française, et une analyse sociologique du phénomène traductionnel tout à fait singulier que fut le prix Formentor et dont Semprún fut le troisième lauréat. Cautionné par plusieurs grandes maisons d’édition (Seix-Barral, Einaudi, Gallimard, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, Rowohlt), ce prix créé au début des années 1960 par Carlos Barral dans l’Espagne de Franco et donc en marge de la Communauté européenne, allait pourtant s’avérer européen avant la lettre, laissant sa marque sur toute une décennie de littérature avant-gardiste. Non seulement il proposait aux auteurs primés une traduction immédiate dans une dizaine de langues (souvent par des traducteurs reconnus) mais il leur assurait une distribution simultanée dans plus d’une douzaine de pays. L’exemple duGrand Voyage(1963), le roman couronné du Formentor qui lança la carrière de Semprún, permet de se faire une idée du trafic traductionnel généré par cette initiative de légitimation unique dans les annales de la traduction littéraire en Europe.
