Plusieurs travaux théoriques et empiriques portent aujourd’hui sur le thème de l’identification d’opportunités, une étape cruciale dans toute création d’entreprise. Parmi ces travaux, un nombre grandissant s’inscrit dans un courant de pensée nouveau, avançant l’idée que différents acteurs pourraient joindre leurs forces pour identifier collectivement des opportunités d’affaires, de façon à supporter le développement des milieux concernés. En effet, on voit de plus en plus émerger des travaux s’inscrivant un courant collectif de l’entrepreneuriat, reconnaissant l’importance d’aller au-delà du seul individu entrepreneur dans l’étude de l’émergence des opportunités. Malgré tout, les repères théoriques pour développer des modèles d’intervention porteurs à cet égard demeurent absents. En effet, dans les travaux sur l’identification d’opportunités, le processus est quasiment toujours individuel et relève généralement de l’entrepreneur. Cet article cherche en partie à pallier le manque de repères théoriques en mettant en évidence dans un premier temps les facteurs influençant le processus individuel d’identification des opportunités retrouvés dans la littérature et pouvant servir d’assises pour étudier le phénomène dans une perspective collective, et en proposant dans un deuxième temps un cadre conceptuel de processus collectif d’identification d’opportunités. Quatre concepts clés ont été dégagés pour aborder la dimension collective de l’identification d’opportunités : l’information, l’apprentissage, la créativité, de même que les réseaux, incluant le capital social.
